HHM Health on NBC-5 KXAS

NBC News reached out to HHM Health to gain insight on how to respond about mass shootings to your kids. She says the most important thing is to talk about it and not ignore that it happened, and not to ignore that your kiddo may have some feelings about this that are way different than your own, and that’s okay.

HHM Health is bridging the gap in health disparities in the Oak Cliff community by opening a new clinic. This clinic accepts patients who don’t have insurance or on Medicaid. Our Population Health Director, Katie Irwin, talked to KXAS reporter Candace Sweat on the importance of giving back to the Vickery Meadow community, especially during the holidays. Often times, this community is over looked and underserved, so local nonprofit organizations came together to throw a Festival of Lights for families to enjoy free food, giveaways and holiday cheer. NBC-DFW promoted HHM Health and their free birth control program. If you are a Dallas Resident and are uninsured or underinsured, you are eligible to receive any type of birth control at HHM Health. All you have to do is make an appointment. This is in partnership with Child Poverty Coalition.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in five people who have had COVID-19 are still experiencing “Long COVID.” HHM Health’s Director of Behavioral Health comments on the mental health toll long COVID takes on patients. This event is FREE for the public to receive immunizations, physicals, school supplies, backpacks and snow cones. Over 700 families came out to HHM Health’s Back To School Fair. The event was heldc in the heart of Dallas’ Vickery Meadow neighborhood at 5750 Pineland Drive. HHM Health understands the need for a back to school fair fo rimmigrant families on a tight budget. KXAS team came out and covered the event. Following the events of the mass shooting in Uvalde, TX, HHM Health’s Clinical Therapist, Tanya Moreno, answered questions about PTSD, how to overcome tragedies, and how to move on. This interview was aired in KXAS’ newscasts. 

According to a recent study, Texas ranks 48th in overall women’s health compared to women in other states. Our Associate Chief Medical Officer talked to KXAS about this issue and how HHM Health fights this health disparity. 

HHM Health’s women’s clinic accepts patients with Medicaid and commercial insurance. For those uninsured, we provide patients with a sliding scale fee.

NBC Universal’s Telemundo covered the Back To School Fair event HHM Health held on the last week of July. Telemundo mentions how immigrant and refugee families benefitted from the event.

Following the tragedy events that happened in Uvalde, Texas, our Clinical Therapist spoke to reporters at Telemundo on how to recover. They asked about PTSD and if that stops at the victim or bleeds into the lives of friends and family.

HHM Health has just opened its Nutrition Education Center to host refugee cooking classes! Our first class was teaching Burmese refugees how to bake a birthday cake! Everyone who came had never made a birthday cake, or used their oven. The goal for these classes are to get refugees acclimated in their new kitchen. As COVID emergencies end, Texans are at risk of losing Medicaid. State health officials will have to reevaluate more than 5.9 million Texans on Medicaid. HHM Health’s Chief Financial Officer, David Hernandez, spoke to reporter Reena Diamente about the importance of healthcare centers continuing to see patients who are kicked off. At least 621,000 Texans are unaware they have diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, the number is of people that have the diagnosis is 2.5 million Texans. HHM Health understands this epidemic should not be overlooked, which is why we have several programs to help patients control their diabetes diagnosis.

WFAA reported on how HHM Health gives all Dallas County residents free birth control when you come into any of our 9 clinics. If we don’t have the type of birth control you need, we can order it for you and it is completely free to the patient. This is in partnership with Child Poverty Coalition.

WFAA continues to report on our program that allows Dallas Residents to receive free birth control for our uninsured patients. Once you are enrolled with HHM Health, you can schedule a free birth control counseling appointment and decide which option you want. This is in partnership with Child Poverty Coalition.

Because of this believe, we are hosting a Back To School Fair where anyone in the community can receive FREE immunizations, physical, school supplies, backpacks, and snow cones. HHM Health goes above and beyond for all their patients. That includes speaking up when someone may not feel comfortable doing so. Our provider, Dr. Providence Uwimana, sat down with reporters from KERA to discuss the health impacts of refugees and immigrants living in inadequate housing. The Healing Hands Luncheon is moving to March with the addition of WFAA Sports Anchor Joe Trahan as the Emcee. The luncheon committee decided to move the luncheon from October to March 2022 because of the uptick in COVID-19 Omnicron cases in the Dallas community. Festival Of Lights

 

HHM Health partnered with Heart House, Literacy Achieves, THR Dallas, many churches in the area and the Vickery Meadow Youth Development Foundation to spread some holiday cheer to our neighbors in Vickery Meadow. In this COVID-friendly event, families went through a “drive-thru” at the Vickery Park Library, where we handed out gifts, candy, goodie bags and had a celebration of lights bringing all of the many cultures together for the holidays.

The return to school is right around the corner, and HHM Health is putting on a back to school fair on July 30, 2022. 

Supplies and clear backpacks will be available for students and snow cones for a sweet treat. There will also be on-site vaccinations at no cost and physicals.

HHM Health recognnizes the diabetes epidemic that Texans face daily. Diabetes affects over 2.5 million Texans, that is why HHM Health is raising awareness with the brand new Community Fit Club. This is a monthly club, free for anyone in the community, to attend to learn healthy tips and tricks to integrate into their lives. The Lake Highlands Women’s League donated $3,000 to HHM Health. With this generous gift, HHM Health will be able to provide car seats to new moms and their newborns. This will allow them to be able to come home from the hospital with their new bundle of joy safely.
