Oak Cliff, TX

Oak Cliff, Texas is one of the oldest neighborhoods surrounding Dallas. The neighborhood originated in 1886 when John Armstrong and Thomas Marsalis purchased 320 acres of farmland west of the Trinity River. The farm was divided into 200 acre increments to create the plat of a new town. The land was then developed into a residential area for Dallas’s elite, which was highly successful by the end of 1887. However, a dispute between the partners would leave Marsalis with complete control over Oak Cliff, while Armstrong would go on to develop his own residential area known as Highland Park.

In order to provide easy transportation to and from Oak Cliff, Marsalis developed the Oak Cliff Elevated Railway. Modeled after transportation systems in New York, this system was marketed as “the first elevated railway in the South.” Marsalis also developed a park, today known as Marsalis Park and Zoo, and the Park Hotel to promote Oak Cliff as a vacation resort. Oak Cliff was officially incorporated in 1890 with a population of 2,470 residents. The city continued to be developed until the 1893 depression, which caused Marsalis to go bankrupt. However, the community was eventually able to get back on track and remains one of the great communities of Dallas. With so much to see and do, the community of Oak Cliff is stronger than ever and is thriving.
