What to expect when getting glasses for the first time?

After years of blurry vision and killer headaches, you have finally decided to get your eyes checked for glasses. It’s important to make an appointment at a trusted optometrist. At HHM Health, we have trusted optometrists who are happy to examine patients and provide them the best care for a reasonable cost. After a few vision tests, your doctor will determine if you need corrective lenses.

This news may feel overwhelming as you may finally be able to see, you now wear a new accessory on your face. To make this transition from optional eyewear to required eyewear easier, our optometrist at HHM Health have come up with a few helpful insights to explain to patients what to expect when getting glasses for the first time.

“I can see!”

The point of wearing glasses is to correct your vision. However, the new view through your glasses may be startling when compared to what you are used to. Everything is clearer, from the street signs to the cars, everything has more detail than you’ve ever seen before.

“Ow, that hurts!”

When you begin to wear corrective eyewear, you may experience headaches or sore eyes during the adjustment period. This is primarily due to the stress on your eye muscles as they work to make sense of what you are seeing. Once your eyes begin to relax, the headaches and soreness will begin to disappear. Some people experience dizziness or light sensitivity as well, but this should only last for a few days. In addition to the pain caused by your prescription, the frames of the glasses may also be unforgettable to wear for a short period of time. This is due to the fact that your temples, nose and ears need time to get used to the new weight on your face.

Prepare for constant cleaning

No matter how hard you try to maintain clean lenses, dirt and grime seem to consistently gravitate towards clear glass. Water drops, fingerprints, oil from your hands, and makeup are the most common culprits. It is always a smart idea to have a soft, dust-resistant cloth on hand to keep glasses clear.

Where are they…?

In the past, you may have found it particularly funny when a friend or family member asked you if you had seen their glasses when they were in visible sight. Well, chances are this will happen to you as well. If you are someone who loses their wallet and keys regularly, be prepared to lose your glasses every now and then as well.

“The designs!”

When it comes to glasses frames, there are so many colors, designs, and features to choose from. There is no reason you cannot make your new glasses an iconic fashion statement. Whether you choose a bold, sophisticated or boho look, have fun with it.
