Dr. Arlene Betancourt, born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, earned her medical degree magna cum laude from the University of Puerto Rico in 1995 and completed her internal medicine residency at UT Southwestern in 1998. She is board certified in both internal and integrative medicine and completed a fellowship at the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine (AWCIM) in 2019.
At UT Southwestern, Dr. Betancourt has held leadership roles, including Medical Director for the Parkland Center for Internal Medicine and the Department of Physician Assistant Studies. In 2018, she launched UTSW’s first Integrative Medicine in Residency program in collaboration with AWCIM.
Her work at Parkland Health (2018–2022) included creating programs integrating behavioral health, pharmacy, and chronic disease management into primary care, as well as founding the integrated pain healing service. She also led employee health integration efforts and helped establish a multidisciplinary integrative medicine residency.
Dr. Betancourt serves on the board of SuperVive and the American Board of Integrative Medicine. She was recently named Deputy CMO of Quality, Safety, and Value at HHM Health, where she is developing a value-based internal medicine department and teaching clinic in partnership with the THD Internal Medicine Residency Program.
